Tattooing is an initiation for most tourists visiting Phuket. It is not a party, it is not an event, it is a memory that everyone will have when they go through the Sak Yant treatment before traveling to the holy land to start their journey, or go through a realistic masterpiece, and a memory of their time in paradise.
Yet, the Phuket climate, with its strong sunlight, ocean salination, and party setting, brings a certain twist to the process as a tropical setting creates a complex multidimensional setting. It does not matter just going in without preparation.
Our desire at Siam Ink is to have your tattoo healed and appear bright forever. To make sure that occurs, we have made the final list of what to do before you sit in the chair of an artist, 7 items.
It is the Golden Rule of holiday tattoos. The Detail Fresh tattoos are open infections. Neither can they be drowned in the sea (they may get infected) nor can they be subjected to the open air (they fade and blister).
When you have a tattoo done on Day 1 of your 10-day vacation, you are not allowed to swim, snorkel, or even sunbathe the remaining days of your vacation. Action: To reserve your appointment during the final 2-3 days of your holiday. Party on the beach and then get tattooed, then fly back and recover in the cool A/C.
Why? Sunburnt or peeling skin can not be tattooed. The Detail: Sunburn is harmful to the skin structure. Tattooing over it leaves it bleeding too much, painful, and the ink will probably blow out, or the skin will peel away, leaving patchy tattoos.
Action: The area that you intend to have a tattoo on should be lathered up with a high SPF (SPF 50+) sunscreen during the time you visit. When you come to the studio with a lobster-red back, we shall have to reject you, I am afraid, as a matter of self-preservation.
Fainting is a fact, and it normally occurs due to the presence of low blood sugar. The Detail: Phuket is hot. You must be dehydrated, though you do not know it. Tattooing causes weight loss and puts the body to the test. When you feel thirsty and hungry, the sugar levels reduce, causing you to become dizzy, nauseous, and more sensitive to pain.
Action: Consume at least 2 liters of water the previous day. Pre-session: Have a heavy meal (carbs and protein) 1-2 hours before your session. Take a sweet (such as a Coke or a fruit juice) and a chocolate bar to the studio to get some sugar into the system in case you start feeling shaky.
Alcohol dilutes your blood and distorts your reasoning. The Detail: It is so not a secret that Bangla Road is a fun place, but you should not get too drunk the night before your appointment. Alcohol makes your blood thin, and hence, you end up bleeding more during the tattoo.
This forces the color out of the skin, and results in the tattoo fades when it heals, as well as makes it difficult to add color to the tattoo on the part of the artist. Action: Do not drink the bucket cocktails within a day of the session. Congratulations, you are ready to celebrate when the bandage is on!
It could be an hour of sitting in a community waiting place (4-6). The Detail: Avoid tight jeans in case you are getting a thigh tattoo. A loose button-down shirt should be worn in case you are getting a rib tattoo as well. Action: Clothing Wear open, black (ink stains!), clothing.
Legs: loose shorts or a skirt.
Back/Ribs: This is a zip/button-down that can be worn backwards.

A few beers the night before is normal, but that heavy night partying is a problem. When you turn up hungover, you will be more sensitive to pain, you can be jittery (straight lines are difficult), and you can feel faint. In case you are openly intoxicated upon arrival, we will not serve you in order to save our artists and your life.
Generally, yes! It is safe as long as the particular region that is being tattooed on is not sunburnt. But you had better remember that sleeping with a sunburnt back, or shoulder, 3 hours making us tattoo your ribs, may not be so pleasant on your part.
You will be better off having us do it. Before the tattoo, we apply a disposable and medical-grade razor to shave the area to make sure that it is sterile. Should any accident occur, such as you shaving yourself at the hotel and accidentally cut yourself or razor burn, we cannot put any tattoo on that sore flesh. Just come as you are!
Tipping is not a compulsory thing in Thailand, but it is highly valued. When you are happy that your artist did a very great job, a tip of 10-20 percent is an excellent way to become a grateful client. At the end of the session, you can drop cash into the artist.
